Now that the new year is on its way, you might be thinking about “stepping up” your home office design. Many Middle Tennesseans choose stylish new floor tile as an attractive, inspiring canvas to build upon. But how do you, a working professional, choose tile that communicates exactly that? What kind of tile will tell your clients that while you work out of the home, you are very much a polished, diligent professional with an ever flourishing business?
Your Industry
Is it creative, such as a graphic designer, or is it more traditional, like an insurance broker?
- CREATIVE: Most creative industries will appreciate a colorful or highly patterned tile, while on the other end of the spectrum,
- TRADITIONAL: Your peers in a traditional industry may feel you lack seriousness or maturity. For those needing to present a more conservative persona, a neutrally colored natural stone, such as limestone, is probably a better choice. Allow yourself to communicate
- TRADITIONAL: Are you clients more accustomed to a corporate setting? If so, they are likely to feel more comfortable with basic decor elements that echo that aesthetic. Large, 24” square tiles echo that corporate vibe, and may just make the difference with a client that’s on the fence. Aim for streamlined sophistication, without slipping into showy or over styled.
- CREATIVE: A larger tile is recommended for the creative home office as well. The difference is that in this case, a bold pattern, preferably one that communicates your aesthetic, is a solid choice.
- TRADITIONAL: Even in a more traditional industry, your home office should still reflect your personal style. When possible to make choices congruent with the updated decor of your home, do it. Again, nothing radical, but consistent, congruent. complementary choices. It’ll help reinforce to the client that you are a man or woman of principles who stands up for what they believe.
- ARTISTIC: In an artistic industry? Again, as self-expression is admired among creatives, you have far more latitude here. Remember, however, depending upon your industry, you wish to dial down an instinctive choice here or there, in order to avoid being perceived as indulgent. Take a day - or three and think about it, rather than acting impulsively. Live with a few samples for just a bit and see how you feel. After all, a few days of self-control are well worth the possibility of avoiding years of regret that you have to explain away to clients over and over again.
