7 Tips for Caring for Laminate Flooring

Caring for Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is one of the most durable flooring products on the market. In fact, it’s endurance and relative affordability make it one of the best choices for the hard wear and tear that comes with a growing family. Properly caring for your laminate flooring will ensure that it continues looking great for as long as possible.

Laminate Flooring Maintenance

1. HANDLE SPILLS IMMEDIATELY

• Allowing liquids to stand on laminate flooring can sometimes lead to damage, so be sure to take care of spills with a dry to damp cloth right away.

2. CLEAN REGULARLY

• A regular habit of sweeping, dusting, and/or vacuuming your laminate flooring with the hard floor attachment will extend the life of your flooring. Dirt, sand, and other gritty material can accumulate and cause  scratching and dulling to your floor’s finish.

3. MINERAL SPIRITS

• Scrub lightly with a clean cloth to remove challenging stains like oil, paint, markers, lipstick, ink, and tar. Always be sure to remove remaining residue with a damp cloth when you are finished.

4. AVOID LIQUID CLEANING PRODUCTS

• Washing or wet mopping your floor with soap, water, oil-soap like Murphy’s, or other liquid cleaning materials can cause swelling, warping, delaminating, joint-line separation, and ultimately void your warranty. Always clean your laminate flooring with products specially formulated for laminates.

5. AVOID ABRASIVES AND BUFFERS

• Steel wool, abrasive cleaners, strong ammoniated or chlorinated type cleaners, as well as buffing or polishing machines can prematurely shorten the life of your laminate flooring. To protect your floor, steer clear of these types of treatments.

6. ICE, ICE BABY

• For cleaning sticky spots such as candle wax or chewing gum, a fast, easy, scratch-free solution is ice! Place the ice on top of the spot until it becomes brittle. Scrape gently with a soft-edged tool to remove. A credit card works well in a pinch! with ice and then gently scrape with a plastic scraper, such as a credit card.

7. WATCH HUMIDITY

• Again, excessive moisture can cause damage to laminate surfaces. A relative humidity level between 35% and 65% (indoors) will help prolong the health and life of your flooring. Alternately, low humidity levels in the cooler months can lead to excess shrinkage. Use an air conditioner to manage humidity and a humidifier to manage dryness.

Other common sense habits to implement include using doormats to minimize tracking abrasive debris across the floor, using floor protectors beneath furniture, and keeping pets’ nails clipped. Generally speaking, any activity that could cause scraping to your flooring should be avoided.
