Choosing the Perfect Color Palette for Your Space

kitchen color.jpg
When choosing a color palette for your kitchen,
There are a number of different factors to take into consideration. The aesthetic, or desired feeling of the room is always number one. After that, lighting level and room size are important to consider. Designing the palette for your space is one of the most exciting parts of the design process. Ultimately, the choices you make at this stage of the process go a long way to dictate how comfortable people will feel in your space. Here is a brief discussion of those  factors to help you make the best choice possible for your home.

What feeling are you trying to achieve?
What is the style of architecture in your kitchen? If you want the feeling in your kitchen to be casual, homey and comfortable, a dark wood may be a good choice for you. If you are looking to effect a more open and airy feel in your kitchen, light colored wood, flooring and countertops may be a better idea for you. The choice of a darker colored granite with lighter wood, provides more depth to the space.

Lighting matters.
Just how much natural and artificial light does your kitchen enjoy? Many windows or exceptionally bright artificial lights allows you more freedom to choose a darker color for the cabinets, flooring and trim. A space with limited natural or artificial lighting typically works better with a lighter color for the wood elements, which will lend your kitchen a more spacious, brighter feel, even in the absence of much light.

Size Matters
The size of the room makes a great difference when choosing between light or dark elements. A smaller kitchen using dark wood will give the space a smaller feel. Dark wood in a spacious kitchen will unify the space, giving your kitchen a warm and inviting feel, rather than open, bare and cold. Of course, as you see in the photo above, light colored wood also works well in a large kitchen. It adds an even more open feeling, and creating an environment in which many guests will feel more comfortable, as they will not feel crowded. Choosing a darker color for the granite countertops will also help unify the room, drawing the attention to the center.
