What's better? Ceramic tile, natural stone, vinyl, carpet, hardwood or laminate flooring?

At Floorz, our customers often ask us which flooring is the best? The simple answer is that there is no such thing as the best flooring. But there is a best flooring for you and your current situation.

The easiest way to figure out which flooring option is best for your needs is to ask yourself three simple questions:

1. How much money do I have to spend?

2. How long do I want my floors to last?

3. What am I willing to do to maintain my flooring?

Once you answer these questions, your options will naturally narrow.

Ceramic tile floors have a stellar reputation with many homeowners becaues they are made from natural materials, if glazed they can resist stains and odors and usually last longer than most other flooring options. But they can also be expensive, complicated to install, and cold on your feet.

Natural stone floors are popular because they come in many colors, sizes and shapes. Each stone is an original, so no two stone floors are alike. Many people find stone floors beautiful, stone floors age well compared to other flooring options, and increase the resale value of a home. One caution: Avoid soft, porous stone in high traffic areas.

If you're worried about your kids or your pets destroying your floors, consider vinyl flooring. It's easy to clean, durable, and affordable. It doesn't fade or stain and is easy to install. That explains why you see it in so many bathrooms and kitchens.

Carpeting continues to be one of the most popular flooring options available because it's often the cheapest and easiest to install, but also because there are so many colors, styles and textures from which to choose.

Most people love the beauty and variety of hardwood floors. But hardwoods can be more expensive than other flooring options like carpet, and require more upkeep. Still, if your priority is to install a floor that will take a lot of wear and tear and last a long time, it's hard to beat hardwood floors.
But it's also important to acknowledge that hardware floors can require more intricate care and cleaning than other options.   For instance, you have to be careful not to use certain types of cleaning products, like ammonia-based cleaning solutions. It's also important to stay clear of wet mops and to stay on top of removing scuffs and scratches.

If you like the look of wood floors but don't want all the expense or upkeep, laminates may be a good option for you. Some people think laminates are a cheap-looking alternative that doesn't last, but in recent years many quality laminate products by reputable manufacturers have appeared on the market. Today's laminates come in many styles and colors and mimic hardwood's beauty, but are often more resistent to stains and scratches and offer a better moisture barrier. Laminate is often easier to install than hardwood and more hygenic.

Five Reasons to Choose Bamboo Flooring

best-teragren-bamboo-flooring-ErEyD.jpg

Bamboo has quickly become one of the top choices in contemporary flooring, and that popularity has proven to have endurance. It’s not hard to see why. Bamboo’s unique beauty and affordability are just two of the reasons our Cool Springs Floorz customers love it. If you’re considering adding bamboo flooring to your home, here is a helpful list of the top 5 reasons we love it too!

1) Durability: Bamboo flooring is a highly durable flooring choice for any location subjected to extensive usage and can stand up very well to the abrasion caused by children and pets. It is tough enough to resist the impact of falling objects in the kitchen as well as in high traffic areas such as the living rooms and hallways.

2) Warmth: Bamboo flooring provides a warm environment through its natural growth patterns. While many solid wood flooring materials create beautiful floors, some flooring contractors and homeowners seek a unique look that offers the type of look that could be described as "outside the box". But, they also need a type of flooring that still adds a level of coziness to an interior. Bamboo flooring gives your room a homey touch, providing comfort and warmth with a really good flooring finish.

3) Environmentally friendly: Bamboo flooring is one of the most environmentally friendly wood flooring options, because it is made from a highly renewable source. It is actually a grass that re-grows after it is strictly monitored and harvested. Bamboo does not require any chemicals for its cleaning and maintenance.

4) Color: Bamboo flooring is available in two colors. One is a natural blond color that shows the unique growth patterns that matches every décor. The other color is a rich amber color, a stunning darker shade achieved by a boiling process that carbonizes the starches found naturally in the bamboo. It is therefore called carbonized bamboo.
5) Cutting edge: Bamboo flooring is among the newest flooring options to appear on the market in the recent years. It is widely preferred by many and is highly appreciated by those who install it. Bamboo flooring provides a unique style to your home or office with a beautiful appearance all of its own.

Your Cool Springs Floorz features Teragren fine bamboo flooring, panels, & veneer products, made with Moso bamboo sustainably harvested at maturity, when it is most dense. Carpet Vs. Hardwood

floorzhm_04.jpg
Flooring is one of the first and biggest decisions a new homeowner will make. If you are considering selling your home, new flooring is is great place to begin preparing a fresh, clean palette that will wow potential buyers. But how to decide which flooring option is right for you? We’ve prepared a list of tips comparing the two most popular home flooring options to help guide you in your decision.

CARPET:
  • Pros:
    • Less expensive - between $3 and $5 per square foot, installed w/padding, & up
    • Easier & faster to install than hardwood
    • Most popular floor covering  - makes up 51% of US market
    • Soft and comforting, especially in times of cold, like early mornings and winter
    • Top quality carpets can last 10-15 years
    • Life can be extended with frequent vacuuming & steaming
    • Hides dirt, so needs less frequent cleaning
    • New technology in synthetic, stain-resistant fibers helps reduce staining
    • Wide variety of color, pattern, and style choices available for more decor options
    • Darker, more durable options are great for kid’s rooms & high traffic areas
    • Quieter than hardwood - helps muffle sound
    • Most carpet has been certified as low emitters of volatile organic compounds
    • Carpets made with recycled content or that can be recycled when they are worn out are available
    • Asthma and allergies friendly?
      • Traps airborne dust particles in between the tufts, where a good-quality vacuum can dispose of it
  • Cons:
    • Not as long-wearing as hardwood
    • Spills may cause permanent stains
    • May become matted over time
    • Some VOC levels considered unacceptable
    • Traps airborne dust particles in between the tufts,  so those less vigilant with cleaning may find allergies and asthma aggravated
    • Carpet styles are trend-sensitive, and cannot be updated as hardwood can
HARDWOOD
  • Pros:
    • Hardwood flooring is a hot trend right now
    • Wood can last hundreds of years with proper care and periodic refinishing
    • Wood is easy to clean and doesn't stain
    • Hardwood is durable
    • Hardwood adds a lasting value to a home that carpet can't
    • Larger variety of woods and colors, to choose from than several years ago
      • Exotic woods in shades of yellow, pink, orange, purple and black are available
      • The trend is toward natural finishes without stains
    • You can easily change a hardwood floor's look with area rugs
    • Can be refinished many times to freshen the look
    • Hand-scraped wood flooring, with deeper grooves, hides small dents and wear that can come from active families and pets
    • Hardwood floors do not hold on to allergens that can sink into the fibers of carpet
    • Lower VOC products are available
    • Easier to spot spills, pet hair, crumbs and debris on hardwood floors
    • Spills can be completely wiped up
    • Wood is a sustainable, renewable and natural material
      • Wood from a responsibly managed forest that meets sustainability standards is available
  • Cons:
    • Between $9 and $12 per square foot, installed, & up
      • Reclaimed old wood can cost up to $30 per square foot
    • Not as easy as carpet to install
      • Must be nailed down, glued or clicked into place
    • Wood sealants and finishes  can release undesirable VOCs
    • Wood needs to be cleaned more frequently than carpet
      • Vacuum or sweep, then mop at least every other day
    • Water damage may be difficult to repair

Beyond the basic considerations of cost, maintenance, durability, and aesthetic appeal, it’s important to take your family’s lifestyle into consideration. Things like pet being house-trained and removing shoes at the door are very important factors in successfully maintaining carpet. Hardwood floors, though generally considered superior in terms of allergy and asthma issues, may not be the best choice if you find your family has difficulty maintaining regular cleaning.

Both are beautiful options for any home. At Floorz, we look forward to introducing you to the wide array of styles available today. As the premier floor covering showplace in the Franklin/Brentwood area, Floorz is your one-stop showroom for all of your floor covering needs!
