Twelve years ago when Jane and her husband John moved into
their first home carpet was the most affordable and fashionable option for
floor coverings. It had been such a fun project picking out the beautiful cream
carpet that paired perfectly with the soft blue of their bedroom, the uplifting
yellow in the kitchen, and especially the cocoa walls in the living room.
However, twelve years, three kids, two dogs, one cat later the spotless cream carpet
looks more like a smorgasbord of puppy training tinkle spots, Hawaiian punch
hurricanes, and dirty tennis shoe trails. Every time Jane walks through her
living room her eyes are automatically drawn to that corner that their little
Labrador chewed up when he was teething, and her little boy’s room is just an
absolute disaster. He has a habit lately of sneaking food to his room, because
he isn’t allowed to eat upstairs. He thought he was being sneaky when he hid his
Christmas candy stash behind the heater attached to his wall. What a morning it
was when John came downstairs red in the face going on and on about the pile of
melted chocolate bars in the carpet.
They’ve been meaning to get the carpets cleaned for years
now. The conversation continuously comes up, but it’s just one of those chores
that is so easily pushed to the wayside. But, last month at their daughter’s
annual physical the doctor informed Jane and John that their seven year old had
asthma. She needed to start taking medicine daily to control her allergies. The
doctor strongly recommended having all the carpets in the house cleaned to rid
them of any pollen, dog hair, and other bacteria that could irritate their
little one’s lungs.
Jane and John sat down to find a date for cleaning that
night after finishing the dishes. The more they talked about their family,
their home, and their daughter’s new medical condition the more they realized
how hard it would be to keep the carpets clean consistently. Not only would
they have to find a day every few months to get all the kids and the animals
out of the house for an extended period of time, but carpet cleaning treatments
don’t run cheap these days. At the conclusion of the conversation Jane and John
decided their lives would be much easier if they just had the carpet pulled out
and replaced them with shiny, resistant, and easy to clean
hard wood floors.
